Mystery Shopper 101

Q: What is a Mystery Shopper or Secret Shopper?
A: A person tasked, as an independent third party, to patronize an establishment, as a typical guest, anonymously. The mission is to collect data and report back what occurred during the experience.

Q: How do I get paid?
A: Compensation includes:

• Reimbursement, typically for a meal for two, which may range from $30 – $250+.
• A fee for the work.

Q: How long will it take to get paid?
A: After a report is submitted, the editing process takes about a week. Once the report completed is submitted to our client, you are paid the fee and reimbursed electronically.

Q: What characteristics are necessary to be a successful i-SPY shopper?
A: We look for the following:

• Superior retention and writing
• Pays strict attention to details
• Follows instructions
• Reliable, submits reports within 24 hours
• Accepts feedback (does not take it personally)
• NO diet restrictions (food or alcohol)

Q: What commitment must I make?
A: At least ONE assignment per month

Q: How long do reports take me?
A: Depends on the type restaurant you were assigned. Fast casual reports take about 25 – 40 minutes. A full-service assignment may take you 1.5 – 2.5 hours.

Q: How do I become a mystery shopper?
A: The process is three steps:

• Fill out an application online
• Fill out, return the Independent Contractor Agreement
• Sign up for a tryout assignment

Q: How does scheduling work?
A: Assignments are based on your availability, experience and client need. It may be a weekday lunch or dinner, weekend brunch or dinner. Our scheduling is very flexible.

Q: Am I an employee?
A: No. Shoppers are Independent Contractors. A 1099 for taxes is needed if you earn $600 or more in a year.
